Farmer’s Wife Sampler 6

31/12/2012

Another 4 new blocks completed.

20121231_094512

Top Row : Block 48 Homeward Bound and Block 71 Push The Corner
Bottom Row: Block 70 Prairie Queen and Block44 Gentleman Fancy.

I have difficulty in completing Block 44. Without the book configuring the location of each template is challenging. The completed block is slightly smaller than 6.5 in X 6.5 in. I might have to sew another one of this block. Due to the complexity of the block, it took  45 -60 minutes for me to come out with a block. The process starts with selecting the right combination of cloth, configuring the location of each template, cutting and sewing. I guest the time taken will be more for the rest of the block :).

Another 4 blocks completed in the evening

Top Row : Block 50 Honey Choice  and Block 14 Butterfly At The Cross Road
Bottom Row: Block 17 Cat and Mice and Block 23 Country Farm

These blocks look nice after they are trimmed into 6.5 X 6.5 in blocks. Want to see how does the blocks look like before the trimming session ? Here it is

Try my best to make a perfect block but it is not that easy especially when the pieces has more than 30 small pieces :)

Farmer’s Wife Sampler 5

30/12/202 - Additional 3 new blocks completed today. Its getting more and more time consuming since pieces for each new block is more than the previous blocks.

20121230_232437

Block 32 Farmer’s Daughter, Block 42 Flower Basket and Block 45 Fruit Basket

Template for Block 42 and Block 45 are similar so I decided to complete both of them today. A very tedious job since each block has more than 30 small pieces.

Farmer’s Wife Sampler 3

28/12/2012

4 new blocks

20121228_201006

Top Row -  Block 81 Snow Ball and Block 40 Friendship  Block

Bottom Row – Block 84 Spool and Block 34 Flock

Love the final piece of block 40 and block 34. I should have used a plan color cloth instead of print cloth for Block 84.

Another 2 blocks

20121228_222900

Block 39 Friendship and Block 35 Flower Basket.

Love the outcome of block 30. The template given for block 35 is slightly incorrect. The handle is hand sewn using ready bias tape (instead of using the template :) )

I am out of simple blocks..Need to do the mathematical calculation in creating the other blocks….

Lesson learn today

  1. Always iron the cloth before it is cut !!!!!
  2. Be patient and enjoy the ‘farming process’

Farmer’s Wife Sampler 1

26/12/2012 – Decided to choose simple blocks on my first day of the journey. So here are the blocks completed today.

First block – Block 2 – Autumns Tints

20121226_232718_thumb[5]

I think this is one of the easy blocks,

The second block – Block 4 Basket Weave

20121226_232707_thumb[5]

Another easy block which used only 1 rectangle template,

The third block - Block 9 - Box

20121226_232728_thumb[5]

The fourth block – Block 1 - Attic Window

20121226_232737_thumb[5]

The fifth block – Block 19 – Checker Box

20121226_232656_thumb[5]

Seen a lot of samples that use various colors for the squares. I decided to use only one color with white background. Like this block even though the pieces are quit small.

The sixth block - Block 10 – Bow Tie

20121226_232640_thumb[6]

Love the poppa dot cloth. This is the most difficult block for me to complete it today. the measurement of the first completed block is not even 6 in square and I have to reopen and sew it again. Love the end product :) .

The last block for the day – Block 6 – Big Dipper

20121226_232627_thumb[5]

Yap, 2 main consideration in choosing the color of the blocks

1) Red in color – Thinking of coming out with red theme wall hangings :)

2) Unless it is necessary, I will choose only two fabrics the most 3 for the blocks. For me too many colors cluttered the block.

Total Completed blocks : 36 out of 56 blocks

I am at the middle of the journey. 28 more blocks to go before I start the binding process.I have no intention to do all blocks in this sampler (111 blocks) Thinking of creating about 56 blocks which are enough for a wall hanging quilt.

Another look of  the completed blocks in random order.

Excited to sew them together…
